Elizabeth commented on what a lovely evening it was, and then Paul, finally finding a parking spot, said, "Half the town must be eating out tonight. I hope we can find a table."
Sandy greeted them, then apologized that she couldn't give them their usual table and showed them to a booth at the far end of the room, next to the corner serving station. Paul assured her that it would be fine.

When the waitress brought their glasses of water, Paul said, "We both want ribeye steak, medium well, baked potato, and Chardonnay. And I'll have coffee, please."
Paul rook out his phone and studied it, as he usually did while they waited. Elizabeth looked around and saw several people she knew, smiling at those who did the same. Since their booth was against the corner serving station, its partition partly blocked her view of the booth on the other side of the serving station, along the back wall. As Elizabeth glanced across, she was startled to see a man at the booth watching her. She acknowledged him with her smile. She knew he was Mr. Templeton, who occasionally came into the County Attorney's office where she worked, but she had never been introduced to him. Obviously, he was having dinner with a lady. Elizabeth could see a hand that held a glass of water on the tabletop.
Paul finally put away his phone and smiled at Elizabeth. "This will be a night to remember, young lady." Her eyebrows lifted for the reason, but Paul just smiled. Wondering what he meant but not getting a hint, Elizabeth glanced away and without meaning to, met the glance of the lawyer across the way, who chose that moment to smile back at her.
